We’re rebuilding our fence!

Posted on March 26, 2026March 26, 2026 by Barry

It’s been a long time since my last update! Today’s project is rebuilding the fence we share with our back neighbor. The fence, as you could see in the April 7, 2025 post, is quite old and greyed. The bottom of the fence has a lot of insect damage — last year I sprayed for ants and termites, but the damage was already beyond repair. This year, we’re taking off the old planks and adding new. It’s still a work in progress, but here is a quick photo.

One thing about this — I am using a horizontal pressure treated 2x6x8 along the bottom, where the old fence had a the planks butted against the ground. I’m hoping this 2×6 will help with the insect damage and provide a better barrier against moisture wicking up into the fence planks. I’ve seen this referenced online as a ‘rot board’ — let’s hope its an anti-rot board for the planks.

I had used this design when I replaced our swinging gate, and it appears to hold up well.

Finally, I’m also trying to spruce up the area between our new patio and our other neighbors. This area has been neglected since the patio was finished in June 2024. I added a cu. yd. of topsoil and planted grass seed. We also picked up some japanese hollies from Costco and planted them. Here are some progress pics from it. I think this fence may have to be next!
